2017-04-22 - Long Path - Lake Skannatati to Monroe We were back! My friend Neil and I had hiked the first 50 miles of the Long Path Sections 1 through 5 from Fort Lee and George Washington Bridge up to the beautiful Lake Skannatati in Harriman State Park over two Saturdays in December.
The parking area at Lake Skannatati does fill up quickly on nice days, but the route of this hike does not see much foot traffic. Highlights of this loop include views of Lake Skannatati and Lake Askoti, the Hasenclever Mine, and a small cemetery with graves from the 1800s. We were poking around our GPS data for Harriman State Park, looking for an area that we hadn’t done and ended up doing a loop from Lake Skannatati. An easy loop hike through lesser traveled areas of the park along old woods roads and footpaths, to a great view and an abandoned mine complex.

It should technically be in Sterling Forest, but it is still within the Harriman bounderies.

From at a kiosk at the northwest corner of the parking area, follow the aqua-blazed Long Path along the north shore of Lake Skannatati on a rocky footpath through a mountain laurel thicket. In half a mile, the trail bends away from the lake, crosses Pine Swamp Brook, and soon passes a huge rock ledge on the right.
